Highlights
SUNDAY 12/10
Vikings at Rams
FOX 1 PM Life on the Mississippi: All three NFC teams located
along the Big Muddy--Minnesota, New Orleans and St. Louis--are
paddling toward the playoffs. However, after the Rams lost three
of five games while MVP quarterback Kurt Warner was out with a
broken finger on his throwing hand, it can be said that reports
of their depth were greatly exaggerated. The Vikings, with
showboat receiver Randy Moss, just keep rolling along. Though
Minnesota isn't at home, it is at dome (Trans World) and brings
an 8-0 indoor record into today's game.
WEDNESDAY 12/13
Spurs at Suns
TNT 8 PM Shawn Marion is the latest superb small forward drafted
by Phoenix, following in the sneakersteps of Walter Davis, Dan
Majerle and Michael Finley (who was shipped to Dallas in the deal
that brought point guard Jason Kidd). The acrobatic 6'7" Marion,
a second-year man, has given more than a Penny's worth while
taking up the slack for injured Anfernee Hardaway. Through Sunday
he was leading the Suns (11-5) in scoring (18.8 points per game)
and rebounding (12.3, second in the league). Kidd was atop the
NBA in assists (10.6) and minutes (42.7).
Penn at Seton Hall
ESPN2 9 PM It's impossible. Replacing Michael Jordan, that is.
The Quakers had their own MJ, a point guard who led Penn to two
straight Ivy League titles before graduating last May. Now they
rely on a second-year power forward, Ugonna Onyekwe, who was the
1999-2000 Ivy newcomer of the year. The Pirates, ranked No. 8,
have one of the nation's top freshmen in Eddie Griffin, a 6'9"
forward out of Penn's home turf, Philly.
Don't Miss
SUNDAY 12/10
Jets at Raiders
ESPN 8:30 pm It was Oakland owner Al Davis who uttered the
deathless command, "Just win, baby," and at least one East Bay
team obeyed: the Concord De La Salle High Spartans, winners of a
national high school-record 113 straight games. After six
playoff-deprived seasons Davis's Raiders, while not on a historic
streak, are back atop the AFC West. Quarterback Rich Gannon
(above) has made canny use of his two veteran Pro Bowl wideouts,
Tim Brown and Andre Rison. Moreover, with the rushers averaging
4.7 yards per carry (second best in the AFC), the Raiderettes are
no longer the only line drawing raves in Oakland. New York,
embroiled in a struggle for a postseason slot, is in "must win,
baby" mode.
ALL TIMES EASTERN. SCHEDULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

THE ZAPPER
CBS airs SI's Sportsman of the Year 2000, hosted by Jim Nantz, on
Thursday (10 p.m.). We can't tell you who'll win the amphora that
we've awarded since 1954, though we do know that Yankees
shortstop Derek Jeter, tennis sibs Serena and Venus Williams, and
golfer Tiger Woods are among the celebs who will attend the
one-hour show at New York City's Beacon Theater. We can guarantee
that the following won't be on hand: John Rocker and Bob Knight.
Recording star Marc Anthony, no stranger to awards shows, will
perform.
