"I was at Valderrama for the American Express Championship when
the story broke about the relationship between Tiger and the
Tour. All the British tabloids wrote the same follow-up, lifting
the same quote from the original story: 'The only time [Tim
Finchem] talks to me is when he wants me to do something for him.
To play in this tournament or that tournament--it's not like he
comes up to me and asks me how I'm doing.' I was worried that
would turn into one of those things that the press latches on to
and doesn't drop.

"On Friday commissioner Finchem was on the 1st tee shaking hands
with each player. I figured all the writers would come to see
what it was like between the two of them, so I wanted to be there
if something came up. And nobody was there. No TV cameras. No
reporters.

"The commissioner reached out his hand, and Tiger shook it and
said, 'Hey, Timmy, what's up?'

"The commissioner said, 'Tiger, how are you doing?' and they
chatted for a moment or two. Commissioner Finchem said something
like, 'We'll talk later.' Tiger said, 'You got it,' and that was
it. It was comfortable.

"Later they said they would talk in the off-season [Woods and
Finchem met on Nov. 27], but I knew right there on the 1st tee
that whatever the issues were, they would work them out and not
make a public thing of them, because they're gentlemen and
they're smart."
