The Week Feb. 6-12

Some Finish
Phil Mickelson wins a playoff with a double bogey? Guess
anything really is possible on the PGA Tour.

Killer Kane
Let's lay all this bridesmaid business to rest. Lori Kane should
now be referred to as the LPGA's best closer.

Close Call
The fact is, Dana Quigley's the real runner-up royalty. Sunday's
second-place finish was his ninth since '97.

Shark Tank
Greg Norman seems to have a new calling: He's helping
up-and-coming players find bizarre ways to lose.

PGA
The weird ending to the Buick Invitational yielded what is
believed to be a Tour record: the most strokes (13) ever by two
players on the last hole of a playoff. Mickelson and Frank
Lickliter both had to reload on the tee after declaring their
first drives unplayable, and Mickelson wound up winning with a
double bogey when Lickliter three-putted from six feet.... Eight
of the last 11 tournaments at Torrey Pines, which is just north
of San Diego in La Jolla, have been won by California natives.

LPGA
Kane, who shot a course-record 66 in the final round to beat
runner-up Annika Sorenstam by two strokes at the Takefuji
Classic in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, has four wins in her last 14
starts.... Karrie Webb, sixth in Hawaii, is winless in four
tries this season, her worst start since '97. Three weeks ago
Sally Dee dyed her hair pink in response to LPGA officials who
had asked her to stop wearing leather pants during tournaments.
Last Thursday she shot what is thought to be the highest score
in LPGA history for a single hole (13) and for nine (53) before
withdrawing.

SENIOR Gil Morgan birdied two of the last three holes to beat
Quigley by two at the Ace Group Classic in Naples, Fla.

ALSO By winning a playoff against Sergio Garcia at the Greg
Norman Holden Invitational in Sydney, Aaron Baddeley, 19, earned
an exemption into the British Open.... In the third round Garcia
took a drop on the advice of his playing partner, Norman,
instead of calling for an official. The drop was ruled illegal,
and Garcia was penalized two shots.
