The Week Feb. 13-19
Golden Age
Joe Durant's 36 under wasn't the most impressive number at the
Hope. Arnie's 71 was.
Foreign Policy
The W by Catriona Matthew of Scotland makes Americans 0 for 2001
on the LPGA tour.
Sunk
The way Jack Nicklaus flamed out with the flat stick, it's easy
to see why he hates putting contests.
Cold Cash
Nathan Green won $54,000 for his second in the Aussie Masters,
and $264,350 for his one.
PGA Durant's 324 (65-61-67-66-65) at the Bob Hope Chrysler
Classic in La Quinta, Calif., was four shots better than
runner-up Paul Stankowski's total and one better than Tom Kite's
tournament record, set in 1993...Palmer, who matched his age in
the fourth round, is the first player to equal or better his age
in a Tour event since a 77-year-old Jerry Barber had a 71 in the
second round of the '94 Buick Invitational...Jesper and Mia
Parnevik named their fourth child, a boy born on Feb. 16,
Phoenix after Jesper's first Tour win, the '98 Phoenix Open.
LPGA Matthew beat Annika Sorenstam by three shots during a
wire-to-wire victory at the Cup Noodles Ladies Hawaiian Open...
Foreign players hold the top eight spots on the money list.
SENIOR Bob Gilder's victory in Tampa, over a Verizon Classic
field that included the top 10 money winners from a year ago,
was his first since '83...Gilder, who ranks second on tour in
putts per round (26.17), needed only 22 on Sunday. Nicklaus, who
fell from a tie for second to 20th with a closing 75, took
35...Tom Wargo has four Senior titles but hasn't defended three
of them--the '00 Liquidgolf.com Invitational, the '95 Dallas
Reunion Pro-Am and the '94 Doug Sanders Classic--because the
tournaments went belly-up after he won them.
ALSO Green, who aced the 176-yard 12th hole at the Huntingdale
Golf Course in Melbourne in the final round, finished a shot
behind Colin Montgomerie...Vijay Singh's win in the European
tour's Malaysian Open was his third in that country.
