Without a doubt, Jesper Parnevik is a wacky kind of guy. But is
he wacky enough to name his next child after a Japanese import?
Annika Sorenstam says she wants to be No. 1 again, and judging
by the way she tore up Tucson, she just might give Karrie Webb a
Same Old Story
That was quite a birthday present newly minted sexagenarian Jim
Colbert gave himself--a victory in a fourth decade.
After the Qatar Masters, won by Tony Johnstone of Zimbabwe, the
European tour makes its '01 debut in, of all places, Europe.
PGA Parnevik, who named his fourth child Phoenix in honor of
his victory there in '98, bogeyed the 72nd hole of the Honda
Classic at the TPC at Heron Bay in Coral Springs, Fla., but so
did Mark Calcavecchia, Geoff Ogilvy and Craig Perks, who all
finished a shot back.... Parnevik's odd-looking putter is a P2
Solution II, made by StickyGolf.... Ty Tryon, a sophomore at
Lake Highland Prep in Orlando, made the field as a Monday
qualifier and came in 39th. He's the youngest player to make the
cut in a Tour event since Bob Panasik, who was 15 when he
advanced at the '57 Canadian Open.
LPGA Sorenstam, the defending champion, closed with a 65 to
shoot a tournament-record 23-under 265 at Randolph North Golf
Course and win the Welch's/Circle K Championship by six strokes
over Laura Diaz, Michelle McGann, Se Ri Pak and Dottie
Pepper.... Sorenstam's score was the second lowest, in relation
to par, in LPGA history.... Lorena Ochoa of Mexico, a freshman
at Arizona and the top-ranked U.S. collegian, tied for seventh
in her LPGA debut, 11 shots behind Sorenstam.
SENIOR Colbert, who celebrated his birthday with a five-under
67 last Saturday in the SBC Senior Classic at Valencia (Calif.)
Country Club, is the ninth player 60-or-over to win on tour. The
eighth was Lee Trevino, at the 2000 Cadillac NFL Classic.
Colbert edged Jose Maria Canizares by a shot.
ALSO Johnstone's win at Doha Golf Club was his sixth on the
Euro tour. He beat Robert Karlsson by two.... Al Del Greco, a
17-year NFL vet, qualified for the Buy.com tour's '01 opener,
the Florida Classic (won by Chris Couch), four days after being
released by the Tennessee Titans. He shot 76-79 and missed the
cut by 15.... Couch, who also played in the Honda when he was
16, in '90, had been the youngest player ever at that event.
