The Week March 20-26

Big A
Annika Sorenstam shoots a 59 and then caps a three-tournament
winning streak with a victory in a major. You taking notes,

Count on It
After next week, know what we're likely never to hear again? No
one has won the Players and the Masters in the same year.

Better Than Average
Not that anyone was counting, but Mike McCullough had been 0 for
28 (years). Now all of a sudden he's 2 for 5 (weeks).

LPGA Sorenstam, who shot a seven-under 281 at Mission Hills
Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., to win by three over
Akiko Fukushima, Janice Moodie, Dottie Pepper, Rachel Teske and
Karrie Webb, is the first LPGA player to win three straight
since Nancy Lopez won a record five in a row in 1978....Low
amateur at the Nabisco was Arizona freshman Lorena Ochoa, who
finished 21st....After eight events this year, an American has
yet to win. The longest such streak in the past had been two
events....Donna Caponi was the only player nominated for the
LPGA Hall of Fame by the tour's Veteran's Committee. Votes must
be cast by April 29.

PGA Woods, the low man in the third (66) and fourth (67) rounds
at the TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., shot a
13-under 275 to win his first Players Championship, by a shot
over Vijay Singh....Woods had been 0 for 4 at the Players. He
has failed to win only three tournaments in which he has made
three or more starts: the Buick Open (0-3), the Phoenix Open
(0-3) and the Nissan Open (0-5)....The field averaged 4.555
strokes at Sawgrass's par-4 18th, making it the toughest hole of
the year....Tom Kite, 51, who became the oldest player to make
the cut at a Players, has qualified for the weekend in all seven
of his regular Tour starts since turning 50.... Forty-four balls
were hit into the water at the island-green 17th, 40 fewer than
last year.

SENIOR After closing with a 65 for a 10-under 200, McCullough
parred the first hole of a playoff against Andy North to win the
Emerald Coast Classic at the Moors Golf Club in Milton,
Fla....Eighty-eight-year-old Sam Snead, recovering from dental
surgery during which all of his lower teeth were replaced, has
withdrawn from this week's Legends of Golf in St. Augustine,
Fla., but still plans to serve as an honorary starter at the
Masters, along with Byron Nelson.

ALSO Darren Fichtart, 25, of South Africa won the rain-shortened
Brazil Open in Sao Paulo by five shots.
