PGA Scott McCarron shot an eight-under 280, including rounds of
72 and 73 during Sunday's finale, to win the BellSouth Classic
at the TPC at Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga., by three strokes over
Mike Weir. The win was McCarron's first since the '97
BellSouth--75 starts ago.... Ian Woosnam, who wanted to play at
Sugarloaf last year but missed the entry deadline, was DQ'd this
year for signing an incorrect scorecard after the first
round.... Ladbrokes has made Tiger Woods a 2 1/2-to-1 favorite
at Augusta. Defending champion Vijay Singh is next at 11 to 1,
followed by Davis Love III and Phil Mickelson at 15 to 1.... A
pro can qualify for the Masters 13 ways. Woods is the first to
do so in every category.... Billy Andrade (Invensys Classic at
Las Vegas), Michael Clark II (John Deere Classic), Jim Carter
(Touchstone Energy Tucson Open) and McCarron are the only Tour
winners since last year's Masters who weren't invited to
Augusta.... Two-time Masters champ Bernhard Langer, 43, has
become the first German to be elected to the World Golf Hall of
SENIOR Defending champions Andy North and Jim Colbert repeated
at the rain-shortened Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf at World
Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla., beating Bruce Fleisher and
David Graham by three. The winners' average age was 55.5. The
field's average was 60.8 years.... Because of poor attendance,
commissioner Tim Finchem may move the tournament.... Christy
O'Connor Jr., who broke his left leg in two places when his
Harley-Davidson motorcycle--a birthday present from his wife,
Ann--fell on him while he was cleaning it, will miss the
remainder of the season.
LPGA Cutter & Buck broke a long-standing policy of not paying
players to wear its clothing and signed Annika Sorenstam to a
three-year endorsement deal worth as much as $600,000.
ALSO After four runner-up finishes in his six years on the
European tour, Cabrera broke through at the Argentina Open at
the Jockey Club in Buenos Aires, beating Carl Pettersson by two
