Rat Pak
What do Se Ri, Pat Bradley, Fred Haas, Phil Mickelson and Lloyd
Mangrum have in common?
Senioritis
Back in the day, the boys used to back up for Nicklaus. Now
they're doing it for Bruce Fleisher.
Big Deal
Robert Karlsson of Sweden, at 6'5" the tallest player on the
European tour, reigns in Spain.
PGA Sutton, 42, became the Tour's oldest winner this season by
shooting a 10-under 278 in the Shell Houston Open at the TPC at
the Woodlands, beating Joe Durant and Lee Janzen by three
strokes.... Sutton's final-round 69 was one of just four sub-70
scores on Sunday and the only subpar round by a player in the
top 10 after 54 holes.... Craig Stadler, the 174th-ranked putter
on Tour, used a long putter for the first time, but missed the
cut by four shots.
LPGA By birdieing two of the last three holes at the Longs Drugs
Challenge in Sacramento, Pak topped Laura Diaz by two strokes
with an eight-under 208 and in the process ended Annika
Sorenstam's four-tournament winning streak.... Bradley stopped
Nancy Lopez's five-tournament streak in '78; Haas halted Byron
Nelson at 13 straight in '45; Mickelson put the kibosh on Woods
after six in a row in '00; and Mangrum cut Ben Hogan off at six
in '48.... Sorenstam failed to break par all week and finished
43rd, 12 shots back.... Pak has two wins and two seconds--both
to Sorenstam--in seven starts.
SENIOR Fleisher ended a nine-month victory drought at the Las
Vegas Senior Classic, shooting an eight-under 208 for a two-shot
win over Jose Maria Canizares, Vicente Fernandez, Walter Hall,
Hale Irwin and Doug Tewell.
ALSO Karlsson's first victory on the European tour, the '95
Mediterranean Open, was also played in Valencia, site of last
week's Spanish Open.... Brett Quigley prevailed in the Arkansas
Classic at Hot Springs Village's Diamante Country Club, which at
7,560 yards is the longest course in Buy.com tour history.
