The Week April 24-30
Rough Edge
What do you call Scott Hoch and a rant about course conditions?
A winning combination.
The Patriot
Rosie Jones did what any red-blooded American would do. She won
one for Nancy Lopez.
Piling On
Top this, Tiger: Hale Irwin has a record 31 Senior victories, or
one in about every four starts.
Fresh Meat
With his W in Portugal, Phillip Price moved to sixth in the Euro
Ryder Cup standings.
PGA Hoch birdied three of four holes midway through the final
round of the Greater Greensboro (N.C.) Chrysler Classic at
Forest Oaks Country Club to finish a stroke ahead of Brett
Quigley and Scott Simpson and end a 94-tournament winless
streak...After Hoch complained that the 2 1/2-inch rough at
Forest Oaks was too short, he was called on the carpet by Tour
commissioner Tim Finchem...Mike Hicks, who hadn't been on a
winning bag since carrying for Payne Stewart at the 1999 U.S.
Open, was a last-minute replacement for Hoch's regular caddie,
Damon Green, who took the week off...Matt Kuchar made his
first cut since turning pro six months ago and finished 17th.
LPGA Jones birdied the first hole of a playoff against Mi Hyun
Kim to take the Kathy Ireland Championship Honoring Harvey
Penick at Onion Creek Golf Club in Austin. Jones's win ended a
victory drought by U.S. players that had stretched 10
tournaments, to November's Arch Wireless Championship, and had
prompted Lopez to say, "I'm an American, and I want the
Americans to win."
SENIOR Irwin, 21 under with three straight 65s, broke the
Bruno's Memorial Classic record shared by Jim Dent and Graham
Marsh at Greystone Golf Club in Hoover, Ala., by six shots...
Mac O'Grady turned 50 last week but says he'll enter the PGA
Tour Q school this fall instead of joining the Senior tour. The
ambidextrous O'Grady, whose real name is Phil McGleno, says he
will enter as Mac O'Grady II and play lefthanded...Tom Watson
will not attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open at Southern Hills,
stopping his consecutive Open streak at 21.
ALSO Price shot a final-round 64 at Quinta do Lago to win a
second Portuguese Open, by two strokes over Padraig Harrington
and Sven Struver. Price first won the tournament in 1994...A
tumor was discovered on Ely Callaway's pancreas on April 23 as
the 81-year-old underwent gallbladder surgery...The World
Amateur Golf Council, which represents golf associations from
more than 90 countries, has petitioned the International Olympic
Committee to include the sport in the 2008 Games.
