The Week May 22-28
Closure
We wondered which would come first, a win by Frank Lickliter or
the end of the Kemper Open.
Full Circle
Carin Koch's best day on tour is at the same place where she
suffered her worst moment.
Book It
Only one thing could have made Tom Watson's W sweeter: having
Doug Tewell come in second.
Old News
Europe's up-and-comers were on hand for the Volvo PGA, won by
journeyman Andrew Oldcorn.
PGA Lickliter, who hadn't won in 167 starts on Tour, overcame
two bogeys on the final three holes to win the Kemper Insurance
Open by a shot over J.J. Henry at the TPC at Avenel in Potomac,
Md.... Lickliter won $630,000 and jumped to eighth on the money
list, giving him the last exemption to the June 14-17 U.S.
Open.... Lickliter continued a Kemper tradition. The two
previous champions, Rich Beem (1999) and Tom Scherrer (2000),
were also first-time winners.
LPGA Koch, disqualified from the tournament in 1997 (page
G15), closed with a six-under 66 to beat Maria Hjorth and Mhairi
McKay by a shot at the Corning (N.Y.) Classic.... Three
Swedes--Koch, Sophie Gustafson and Annika Sorenstam--have won
seven of the tour's 15 events this year.
SENIOR Watson has won five British Opens, two Masters and a
U.S. Open, but his one-shot win over Jim Thorpe at Ridgewood
Country Club in Paramus, N.J., was his first in a PGA-sponsored
event as well as his first Senior major.... Tommy Horton, a
mainstay on the European senior tour, was DQ'd after it was
discovered that he had used a nonconforming TaylorMade R360
driver in the first round.
ALSO Oldcorn, 41, is the oldest winner in the history of the
Volvo PGA Championship, which he won by a stroke over Angel
Cabrera at the Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, England.... Led
by junior Reilley Rankin, who birdied three of the final five
holes, Georgia beat Duke by three shots to take the women's NCAA
championship at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in
Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Duke senior Candy Hannemann won the
individual title in a playoff against Arizona freshman Lorena
Ochoa, with a par on the first hole.
