The Week June 12-18

Tulsa Toast--We thought Jean Van de Velde had class. Retief
Goosen does him one better with his on-the-rebound U.S. Open win.

French Twist--Rachel Teske wins for the first time under her
married name, with the runner-up's boyfriend as her caddie.

Jersey Gil--Since the Instinet Classic moved to New Jersey last
year, Morgan has two victories and an albatross.

PGA Goosen, a 32-year-old from South Africa, is the eighth
player to make the Open his first victory in the U.S. Goosen
beat Mark Brooks 70 to 72 on Monday at Tulsa's Southern Hills in
the 32nd 18-hole playoff in Open history.... Brooks, 194th in
the World Ranking going into the Open, would have been the
lowest-ranked player ever to win a major. The lowest is John
Daly, who was 168th when he took the '91 PGA.... Stewart Cink, a
shot out of the playoff in third, has the best average finish
(14th) among those who have played in the last six Opens....
Phil Mickelson and David Duval, tied for seventh and 16th,
respectively, have a combined 20 top 10 finishes in 62
majors.... The 466-yard 18th hole at Southern Hills was the
Open's hardest, with a 4.44 average. The easiest hole, and the
only one with an under-par average, was the 534-yard 13th, at
4.82.

LPGA Teske, who made the Evian Masters in Evian-les-Bains,
France, her fourth LPGA title, married Dean Teske in 1998 but
used her maiden name (Hetherington) until this year. Teske
birdied two of the last four holes to win by a stroke over Maria
Hjorth, whose boyfriend, Shaun McBride, caddies for Teske.

SENIOR Morgan successfully defended his title at the TPC at
Jasna Polana, in Princeton, by shooting a 15-under 201 to beat
Tom Jenkins and J.C. Snead by two strokes.... In the opening
round Morgan made the tour's first double eagle of the season,
and 21st in history, by holing a 256-yard three-iron on the
558-yard 7th hole.

ALSO Fred Raphael, the creator of the Legends of Golf, which
spawned the Senior tour, died of liver cancer on June 12. He was
80.... Louisiana State senior Meredith Duncan became the first
player in 31 years to win a second consecutive Women's Western
Amateur, at Oxmoor Country Club outside Chicago.
