The Week July 24-30
The Graduate
After flunking Q school, David Gossett earns his Tour card the
hard way--with a win.
Pak Mark
The only player to come back on Sunday to beat Se Ri Pak?
Dorothy Delasin, twice.
Nitty-gritty
Allen Doyle does it again, raising the question: Is he golf's
most underrated player?
Old Reliable
Bernhard Langer, with his 38th Euro win, is a lock to make his
10th Ryder Cup team.
PGA Gossett, who turned pro in July 2000 after his sophomore
year at Texas, is the eighth first-time winner this year. There
were only nine in all of 2000. He shot a 19-under-par 265 to beat
Brinny Baird by a stroke in the John Deere Classic at the TPC at
Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.... Gossett, 22, finished 68th at Q
school despite a 59.... Gossett and Sergio Garcia, 21, are the
only winners under 25 this year.
LPGA Delasin, 20, erased a four-shot deficit to Pak for the
second straight year in the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic at Squaw
Creek Country Club in Vienna, Ohio. Delasin's career-low 65 on
Sunday gave her a one-stroke win over Tammie Green.... Clint
Begay, who caddied for his older brother, Notah, during both of
his 2000 PGA Tour victories, was on the bag for Delasin, as he
has been most of this season.... Delasin, Pak and Nancy Lopez
are the only players in 25 years to win two or more tournaments
before turning 21.
SENIOR For the second time in three weeks, Doyle won in sudden
death, this time beating Bruce Fleisher on the third extra hole
of the State Farm Senior Classic in Hunt Valley, Md.... Ian
Stanley, 52, of Australia beat New Zealand's Bob Charles on the
first playoff hole to win the British Senior Open at Royal
County Down in Newcastle, Northern Ireland. Jack Nicklaus tied
for third.
ALSO Only Nick Faldo, with 11 appearances, has played in more
Ryder Cups than TNT Dutch Open winner Langer.... Steve Haskins's
victory at the Buy.com Ozarks Open in Springfield, Mo., was his
second in a record 272 starts on that tour.... Nicole Perrot, 17,
of Santiago, Chile, won the U.S. Girls' Junior crown, while Henry
Liaw, 15, of Rowland Heights, Calif., took the boys' title....
Kevin Na, a 17-year-old from Diamond Bar, Calif., and the
top-ranked junior in the U.S., plans to forgo his senior year of
high school to play professionally in his native South Korea.
