Faces in the Crowd


COLOR PHOTO: JIM LUZZI Pete Exline, JACKSONVILLE Team Handball Exline, 22, a recent graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, was named the most valuable goalie in the nine-team U.S.A. Team Handball college championship. He made 14 saves in Army's 26-15 title-game win over North Carolina, which gave the Cadets the crown for the fifth straight year.

COLOR PHOTO: JGLEN GRAVES' PHOTOGRAPHY Keosha Sanders, STAFFORD, VA. Track and Field Keosha, 17, won the girls' outdoor high school state title in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.9 seconds. She also holds the indoor state titles in the 55 hurdles and the 300 run and placed second in the 60 hurdles at the Nike indoor nationals. She'll attend Iowa State on an athletic scholarship.

Golf Quinn, 23, became the first person to sweep the state's top amateur events by winning the best-ball (with Paul Williamson of Holmen), match-play and amateur titles. As a junior last spring he also led Wisconsin-Eau Claire to its first Division III championship.

COLOR PHOTO: JJIM MIDGETT Sissy Neugent, WAXAHACHIE, TEXAS Bowling Neugent, 48, a bowling-center manager, won the Division I singles crown at the women's international championships. In her first win, Neugent set the women's record for the highest series in Division I competition, with games of 236, 257 and 202 for a total of 695.

Weightlifting Burgener, 19, set the American junior records for the 231-pound weight class in the snatch (357.5 pounds) and total (770) at the junior world championships, breaking marks he'd set at the junior national tournament. He also holds the U.S. junior record for the clean and jerk (418).

COLOR PHOTO: JDEBORAH BOOKER Betty Ann Barnett-Sallee, HONOLULU Swimming Barnett-Sallee, 55, a flight attendant, broke 55-59 age-group records in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard backstrokes and the 200 individual medley at the masters national championships, her first pool competition in 37 years. She has also won nine ocean races in her state this year.
