PGA The tape-delayed telecast of the final round of the NEC
Invitational drew a 7.1 Nielsen rating, the second-highest
Sunday number of the year after the Masters' 12.9....The
Woods-Furyk playoff at Firestone Country Club in Akron, which
Woods ended with a birdie on the seventh extra hole, tied for
the third longest in Tour history. The longest occurred at the
Motor City Open in 1949, when Lloyd Mangrum and Cary Middlecoff

eight-under 64s in the second and fourth rounds to win the
Reno-Tahoe Open at Montreux Golf and Country Club by a shot over
Jerry Kelly....Bryce Molder, 22, making his pro debut, finished
two back in third, and Charles Howell, 22, was fourth.

LPGA Daly-Donofrio shot a 15-under 273 for a one-stroke win over
Mhairi McKay, who missed short putts on the final two holes, and
Moira Dunn at the First Union Betsy King Classic at Berkleigh
Country Club in Kutztown, Pa....Natalie Gulbis, 18, who dropped
out of Arizona to turn pro, won an LPGA sectional Q school in
Venice, Fla., and will become the youngest player on tour if she
gets through final qualifying next month in Daytona Beach.

SENIOR Walter Hall became the ninth first-time winner this year,
and the fourth in a row, beating Ed Dougherty with a par on the
first hole of a playoff at the AT&T Canada Senior Open at
Mississauga (Ont.) Golf and Country Club....Mississauga's head
pro, Gar Hamilton, came in 50th, best among the seven Canadians
in the field.

ALSO Dickerson, a 20-year-old junior who earlier won the Western
Amateur, birdied the 36th hole of the final to edge Robert
Hamilton, 23, at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta....Paul Casey of
England, making only his 11th start on the European tour,
birdied the 72nd hole to edge Alex Cejka by a shot in the
Scottish PGA at Gleneagles....The American Civil Liberties Union
calls Southern Dunes, a new club in Scottsdale, Ariz.,
co-designed by Fred Couples, "a bastion of intolerance." When it
opens next year, Southern Dunes will be the only club in the
state to exclude women.

THREE COLOR PHOTOS: PHOTOGRAPH BY FRED VUICH Blast off! Just when it looked as if Jim Furyk would lose the NEC playoff on the first hole, he sank this bunker shot for par to delay his eventual demise.
