COLOR PHOTO: CHERYL BARRA Brendan Meyers, NEW YORK CITY Fencing Brendan, 13, went 24-0 as he won gold medals in the youth-12 and the youth-14 foil competitions at the summer national championships. He also earned bronzes in the under-16 and under-19 categories and became the youngest male ever to be ranked in Division I.
COLOR PHOTO: JIM LUZZI Amber Liu, LA MESA, CALIF. Tennis Amber, 17, defeated Allison Baker, 15, of Raleigh 6-1, 6-2 to win the girls' 18-and-under Super National championships. She won each of her seven tournament matches in straight sets, dropping only 20 games. Amber also won the Malaysian international championships and the Gas Negara title.

Swimming Johnson, 70, the retired Arizona State coach, broke world 70-74 age-group records in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle, the 50 and 200 butterfly, and the 200 individual medley at the national championships. He also established world marks in the 100 fly and the 100 individual medley this summer.

Soccer Erin, 15, a left fullback, anchored a defense that held opponents scoreless in all 14 matches as the South Coast girls' club won the girls' 16-and-under Gothia Cup in Goteborg, Sweden, and the Dana Cup in Hjorring, Denmark. South Coast also won the state club title for the fourth time.
COLOR PHOTO: PHOTO IMAGES Donovan Kilmartin, MERIDIAN, IDAHO Track and Field Donovan, 17, set a U.S. young men's record in the decathlon at the Junior Olympics, scoring 7,405 points, and also won a gold medal in the pole vault by clearing 16'4 3/4". As a sophomore at Eagle High he was the state champ in the 110-meter hurdles, the long and high jumps and the pole vault.
COLOR PHOTO: TOM KIMMELL Mike Huszka, COLORADO SPRINGS Weightlifting Huszka, 68, won the U.S. 65-69 age-group championship in the 187-pound weight class to run the number of his age-group weight-class national titles to 24. Huszka, who has been world champion 14 times, has held every U.S. and world record in his age group for the last 24 years.
