Soccer Noonan, an All-America junior forward at Indiana, had 12 points in three games to lead the No. 6 Hoosiers over Butler, No. 8 Penn State and Michigan State. He also scored the game-winner against No. 2 Washington and has been involved in 14 of the Hoosiers' 19 goals this season.

Football Tim, a senior running back at Clarenceville High, became the first Michigan high school player to score 100 career touchdowns, after getting three against Richard High in Riverview. Tim, who's also the Division 3 state champ in the 100 meters, is averaging 16.9 yards a carry and has 28 TDs this season.

Volleyball Nieves, 42, coached the U.S. men to their first World University Games gold medal as they defeated France in the title match and won 21 of 25 games in the seven-match tournament. Nieves, who guided Stanford to the national title in 1997, was twice the NCAA men's volleyball coach of the year.

COLOR PHOTO: ALAN RABIDEAU Kristy Veazie, DEXTER, MAINE Field Hockey Kristy, a senior forward for Dexter Regional High, broke the state record for career goals when she scored her 83rd, off an assist from her sister, Brittany, a sophomore. Kristy, who has scored 30 of the 13-0 Tigers' 74 goals this season, led Dexter Regional to state championships in 1998 and 2000.

COLOR PHOTO: DAN KOECK Mike Podolak, OXBOW, N.DAK. Golf Podolak, 47, earned his 20th state championship by winning the North Dakota stroke-play title with a seven-under 203. The 1984 U.S. Mid-Amateur champ and an '85 Walker Cupper, he has won seven state stroke-play, seven mid-am, four match-play and two better-ball crowns.

Cross-country Zoe, a freshman at Flathead High, broke her third girls' high school course record of the season by winning the three-mile Mountain West Classic in 17:51. Zoe, who has won all six races she has entered, has led the nine-time state champion Bravettes to a 4-2 record this fall.
