Gear Keeping track of how far and fast you're running, plus ways to ensure you're on the right track

Map in the Human Hand

Maptech's Pocket Navigator software ($99.95) turns your Pocket PC
into a richly detailed terrain map or nautical chart. Move to
different places on the map with a touch of a stylus or hook up a
global positioning system for real-time tracking of your journey.

Stay the Course

Brunton's Nomad Digital Compass ($69.95) has three navigation
modes (compass, forward and reverse) that can store route
headings and warn you when you have deviated from your bearing.
If you stray from your intended route, the Nomad will point you
back in the right direction using a magnetic sensor that is
accurate to within one degree. A backlit LCD screen lets you use
it at night. Brunton Company, 800-443-4871; www.brunton.com.

Run-o-Meter

Take the guesswork out of training with the Nike SDM[Triax 100
($235), which consists of a shoe-mounted sensor and a watch. The
sensor attaches to your laces and transmits speed and distance
info to the watch, which can graph your speed as well as store
data using a chronograph so you can gauge your progress. Nike,
