Faces In The Crowd

Jerry Kluft, BOCA RATON, FLA.
Powerlifting
Kluft, 66, a lawyer, bench-pressed 336 pounds to break the 65-69
age-group World Natural Powerlifting Federation raw record for
the 220-pound class. Kluft, who underwent a double hip
replacement in 2000, also set an AAU age-group raw bench-press
world record for his weight class in 1999.

Maureen Tasch, ANN ARBOR, MICH.
Field Hockey
Tasch, a senior goalkeeper at Michigan, made 11 saves to help
the Wolverines defeat top-ranked Maryland 2-0 for their first
national championship in the sport. Tasch finished the season
with a school-record eight shutouts and was named to the
all-tournament team at the NCAAs.

Lorenzo Booker, PORT HUENEME, CALIF.
Football
Lorenzo, a senior running back at St. Bonaventure High, became
the state's alltime leading rusher and scorer with 8,495 yards
and 850 points. The Gatorade player of the year, he ran for
2,869 yards to lead the Seraphs to the California
Interscholastic Federation divisional title for the third
straight year.

Angela Bizzarri, CINCINNATI
Cross-country
Angela, 13, ran a 4K course in 14:33.2 to beat Merideth Snow,
14, of Omaha, by four seconds and win the youth girls' Junior
Olympics national championship. An eighth-grader at
Sunman-Dearborn Middle School, she has won 26 consecutive races
in the two years that she has run for the Trojans.

Dennis Olson, AUBURN, WASH.
Basketball
Olson, 61, the women's coach at Highline Community College in
Des Moines, Wash., guided the Lady T-Birds to a 90-58 win over
Bellevue Community College for his 500th career victory. Olson,
who coached high school teams for 20 seasons, was named the
state's high school girls' coach of the century.

Kim Black, LIVERPOOL, N.Y.
Swimming
Black, 23, a May graduate of Georgia with a 3.95 average, was
named the NCAA woman of the year for athletic and academic
excellence. She led the Lady Bulldogs to their third straight
NCAA title last spring and anchored the winning World University
Games 4x200-meter freestyle relay team.
