Soccer Welsh, a junior forward at Penn State, was awarded the women's Hermann trophy after setting Big Ten career records in goals, assists and points, with 69, 39 and 177, respectively. A three-time All-America and three-time Big Ten player of the year, she finished the season with 25 goals and 18 assists.

In his career he's passed for a state-record 10,994 yards and 103 touchdowns.

She beat No. 2 Delia Sescioreanu, 15, of Romania, 6-3, 6-3, to become the first American to win her age group since 1993. She then teamed with Caitlin Collins, 16, of Lawrence, Kans., to win the doubles 6-3, 7-5.

Bowling Rosenburg, 37, an office manager, broke the Women's International Bowling Congress three-game high-series record after rolling games of 299, 279 and 300 for a total of 878. A three-time state singles champion, Rosenburg was inducted into the Missouri bowling hall of fame last year.

COLOR PHOTO: JIM LUZZI Tyler Kupper, WESTON, CONN. Golf Tyler, 16, became the first player since 1990 to win the men's and junior titles at Scarsdale (N.Y.) Golf Club in the same season. At age 15 he was the youngest men's champion in club history. A junior at Weston High, Tyler was selected to the Division IV all-state team last spring.

COLOR PHOTO: UF SPORTS INFORMATION Vanessa Hayden, ORLANDO Basketball Hayden, a sophomore center at Florida, had 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks in a 73-47 victory over Kent State to set the school mark for blocks and get the second triple double by a Gators female. She is averaging 18.3 points and leads the SEC with 12.8 rebounds a game and 11 double doubles.
