Angela Prescott, ST. PETERSBURG
Angela, 17, defeated Jessica Miron, 16, of Miami to win the U.S.
women's bantamweight national crown and beat Eleni Koutsilianos,
16, of Astoria, N.Y., for the U.S. junior welterweight title. A
member of the national team, Angela was the U.S. Taekwondo
Union's 2001 junior female athlete of the year.
Jocelyn Penn, CONYERS, GA.
Penn, a junior forward at South Carolina, surpassed the 1,000
career points mark while scoring 32 in a 91-66 victory over
Arkansas. Penn, who is averaging a team-high 17.3 points, 7.1
rebounds and 2.7 steals a game, has led the Lady Gamecocks to a
17-3 record this season.
Tyler Evans, STEWART, MINN.
Tyler, a senior running back at McLeod West High, rushed for 176
yards and two touchdowns to lead the Falcons to a 30-22 win over
Pillager High for the Class A state championship. Tyler finished
his career with a state-record 7,503 rushing yards on 1,065
attempts and 92 touchdowns.
Marie-Louise Michelsohn, STONY BROOK, N.Y.
Track and Field
Michelsohn, 60, a mathematics professor at the State University
of New York at Stony Brook, broke her own masters world indoor
record for the 60-64 age group when she ran the 1,500 meters in
5:42.57. Michelsohn also set her age group's world mark in the
3,000, finishing in 12:06.88.
Bryan Snyder, EASTON, PA.
Snyder, a senior at Nebraska, pinned No. 9 Joe Carr of West
Virginia, to extend his record to 23-0 this season and 126-10 in
his career, the highest winning percentage in Huskers history.
Snyder, who is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the 157-pound class,
is 6-0 against ranked opponents this season.
John Wright, SEAL BEACH, CALIF.
Wright, 38, guided the women's junior national team to a 10-9 win
over Australia, giving the U.S. its first world title. The
women's coach at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif.,
Wright led the Rustlers to four straight community college state
championships from 1997 to 2000.
