Her score was the second highest in school history. In seven meets this year she has placed first in the all-around two times and on beam five times.

Track and Field Janice, a junior at Natchez High and the 2001 junior national champion in the 200, ran the 55 meters in 7.01 and the 400 in 56.72 to win both events at the LSU Classic. Her time in the 55 was the fastest by a high school girl this year, and her clocking in the 400 was the fourth best.

In the 2001 world championships he earned gold as a member of the victorious U.S. elite team and an individual silver in the jumping competition. He was also last year's U.S. Open men's jumping champion.

COLOR PHOTO: MICHAEL QUARTERMAN Jonathan Acosta, SAN JUAN Volleyball Acosta, a freshman outside hitter at UCLA, had 49 kills, 17 digs and seven block assists in three matches to lead the Bruins to the Outrigger Hotel Tournament title for the fifth year in a row and to the No. 1 ranking. He was named tournament MVP and national player of the week.

Luge Samantha, 16, raced to a two-heat total time of 1:32.573 to beat Germany's Heike Kobylka, 16, by .281 of a second and earn the junior women's single World Cup luge championship. After racing in all four series events, Samantha stood second overall with 315 points.

Basketball Mazzante, a sophomore shooting guard at Penn State, set a Big Ten women's single-game scoring record with 49 points in an 88-83 win over Minnesota. Mazzante, who shot 16 of 25 against the Golden Gophers, was averaging 25.2 points and 2.0 steals this season.
