In The Crease
Northeastern senior defenseman Jim Fahey, a Hobey Baker
candidate, has unexpectedly developed into a prime pro prospect.
Fahey, the 212th selection in the 1998 draft by the Sharks, is a
6-foot, 215-pounder who has learned to move the puck very
well.... Until the mid-1990s Boston College, the defending NCAA
champion, rarely recruited outside New England, but two of its
best players this season, sophomore forward Ben Eaves and
freshman defenseman John Adams, are Minnesotans. How important
have those players been to the Eagles? With Eaves (broken ribs)
and Adams (broken thumb) out with injuries in January, BC lost
six consecutive games; with the duo back in the lineup it had
won four of its last five through Sunday.... After the college
season the NHL's Wild may sign RPI junior center Mark Cavosie,
who was the 99th selection in the 2000 draft. Cavosie, who's 6
feet and 160 pounds, has dominated the ECAC this season (45
points in 29 games) but would need to get stronger to play in
the NHL.... The top three candidates to replace Michigan State
coaching legend and athletic-director-to-be Ron Mason following
the season are Jeff Jackson, the former coach at Lake Superior
State who is behind the bench for Guelph in the Ontario Hockey
League; Kelly Miller, a former Spartans player who's an
assistant with the Islanders; and Michigan State assistant Tom
Newton.... NHL scouts are flocking to watch 6'5" goalie Joe
Pearce, a 19-year-old who's playing for the New Hampshire
(junior) Monarchs. Pearce is eligible for the draft and has
verbally committed to Boston College. The Eagles, however, are
stocked in net with junior Tim Kelleher and freshman Matti
Kaltiainen, so Pearce will play one more season in juniors.
