Cat Osterman, HOUSTON
Softball
Osterman, a freshman lefthander at Texas, became the first woman
in NCAA history to collect 500 strikeouts in her first season.
She had an 0.83 ERA, threw five no-hitters and set a Longhorns
single-season record of 17 shutouts while striking out a total
of 554.
Jim Crawford, ST. DAVID, ARIZ.
Baseball
Crawford, 72, the coach at the St. David Unified School, guided
his team to its third straight Class A state championship.
Crawford, who has won more state titles than any coach in
Arizona history, has 15 championships in 37 years with the Tigers.
Jessica Smith, WICHITA, KANS.
Soccer
Jessica, a senior forward for Wichita High Southeast, became her
state's alltime leading scorer when she had three goals in a 4-1
victory over Wichita Heights. Named Kansas' girl's soccer player
of the year, she finished her Buffaloes career with 128 goals.
Otukile Lekote, RAMOTSWA, BOTSWANA
Track and Field
Lekote, a sophomore at South Carolina, won his third consecutive
NCAA crown in the 800 meters with a time of 1:45.17, the third
fastest in the world this year. He also has four SEC titles in
the event and is a seven-time All-America.
Erin Riedy, ELLICOTT CITY, MD.
Lacrosse
Riedy, a senior midfielder at Randolph-Macon College, in
Virginia, scored five of her game-high seven goals in the last
seven minutes of regulation in the Old Dominion Athletic
Conference title game against Washington and Lee. Her Yellow
Jackets won in OT, 12-11.
Julia Loya, MISSION VIEJO, CALIF.
Powerlifting
Loya, a senior at the United States Naval Academy, won her
fourth consecutive national championship in the 165-pound class
and finished her college career undefeated. She holds the
national collegiate records for the squat, deadlift and total.
Josh Lefkowitz, NEW YORK CITY
Tennis
Lefkowitz, a senior at Williams College, won his third Division
III singles crown and led the Ephs to their second straight
national title. A four-time All-America, he was named the
division Intercollegiate Tennis Association's senior player of
the year.
