Jana Peterkova, KARLOVY VARY, CZECH REPUBLIC
Golf
Peterkova, a sophomore, won the individual title and led Florida
Southern College to a team victory at the NCAA Division II
championships. This was Peterkova's second straight Division II
title and the Lady Mocs' third consecutive national championship.
Jack Butcher, LOOGOOTEE, IND.
Basketball
Butcher retired as the winningest high school coach in Indiana
history, with 806 victories in 45 years at Loogootee High. He
took the team to two state finals, in 1970 and 1975, and suffered
only two losing seasons.
Jackie Homiak, BEAR, DEL.
Softball
Jackie, a senior righthander at Caravel Academy, became the first
athlete in Delaware history to be selected first-team all-state
for five consecutive years. With a record of 19-3 and an 0.24 ERA
this year, she led her team to its fourth consecutive state
title.
Lashinda Demus, PALMDALE, CALIF.
Track and Field
Demus, a South Carolina freshman, set a world junior record of
54.85 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA outdoor
championships. She also ran the anchor leg for a 4x400-meter
relay team that set a collegiate record (3:26.46) at the meet.
Josh McKinney, PRINCETON, W.VA.
Soccer
McKinney, 23, led the U.S. team to an international paralympic
tournament win in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. He scored seven
goals in four games, including all the U.S. goals in a 3-2 win
over England in the final, to earn the tournament's Golden Boot
award.
Brian Baker, COLUMBUS, GA.
Baseball
Baker, a freshman righthanded pitcher at Columbus State, was
named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Division II tournament
after going 3-0 with one save and 14 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings.
For the season Baker went 7-0 with eight saves.
Eugene L. Scott, NEW YORK CITY
Tennis
Scott defeated No. 1-ranked King Van Nostrand 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to
win the USTA men's 65-and-over clay court championship in New
Orleans. Scott, eligible because he turns 65 in December, dropped
only one set while advancing through the 72-player field.
