Faces in the Crowd

Mandy Brown, POWAY, CALIF.
Softball
Mandy, a senior righthander at Poway High, pitched 120 innings
without allowing an earned run as she led the Titans to a
Division I state title. In the championship game, against La
Costa Canyon, she struck out 10 and hit a bases-loaded triple.

Bradley Ally, TAMARAC, FLA.
Swimming
Bradley, 15, set a Florida Gold Coast record of 2:09.38 in the
200-meter individual medley, breaking a mark for ages 15-16 that
was established in 1990 by eventual Olympic gold medalist Ryan
Berube. Bradley had set 15 Gold Coast records in the 13-14 age
group.

Juli Wightman, CHICOPEE, MASS.
Golf
Juli, a sophomore at Chicopee High, won her second consecutive
Western Massachusetts girls' title, by seven strokes, a month
after winning the state Division I title by four strokes. She has
won 13 local or regional tournaments in the past two years.

Ed Cheff, LEWISTON, IDAHO
Baseball
Cheff, 59, a coach at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, led
the Warriors to their third NAIA title in the last four years and
their 12th in his 26 years at the school. Cheff, who has a record
of 1,307-358-2, has been named NAIA coach of the year six times.

Abbey Breit, LOUISVILLE
Volleyball
Abbey, 16, was named MVP of the USA Junior Olympic Volleyball
Invitational in Louisville. A middle blocker and hitter, she led
the Louisville Attack volleyball club to a victory in the finals
of the 18-and-under division against the Chicago Jrs.

Riley Adamson, ALBUQUERQUE
Wrestling
Riley, 12, won his fourth straight triple crown while competing
at the Kids Greco-Roman and Freestyle National Championships. A
triple crown is achieved by winning the folkstyle, freestyle and
Greco-Roman championships in the same year.

Ben Shorey, OSBORN, MAINE
Track and Field
Shorey, a freshman at Wisconsin-Parkside, broke the American
Junior 10,000-meter race walk record with a time of 42:50.20 at
the USA Junior National Track and Field Championships. He was
named the meet's outstanding male athlete.
