Carly Patterson, BATON ROUGE
Carly, 14, won the all-around junior title at the U.S.
Gymnastics Championships in Cleveland. She finished second in
balance beam and third in floor exercises. Carly had won at the
U.S. Classic in Virginia Beach to qualify for the event.
Kathy Slattery, LEBANON, N.H.
Slattery, 50, won her 18th consecutive Hanover Country Club
women's championship. She has now taken 36 championships at three
New Hampshire clubs over five decades. Slattery won her first
title at age 15 at the Beaver Meadow Golf Club in Concord.
Marcie Hampton, GAINESVILLE, FLA.
Marcie, 16, was named best attacker as she led the U.S. team to a
title in the NORCECA Youth Girls Volleyball Championship in Salt
Lake City. She had nine points on nine kills in a straight-set
win in the finals against the Dominican Republic.
Luke Johnson, ESCONDIDO, CALIF.
Luke, 15, won three events and took second in a fourth at the
National Lifeguard Championships in Pacific Beach, Calif. He won
run-swim-run and the distance swim and was on the winning
swim-relay team, giving him the highest point total in the junior
Jenna Kubesch, WEIMAR, TEXAS
Jenna, 16, was named most outstanding player at the Babe Ruth
Softball 16 & Under World Series in Greenville, N.C., for the
second year in a row. She pitched four victories, including two
no-hitters, leading the Tricounty team to its third straight
Victor Halamicek, ST. CHARLES, MO.
Track and Field
Victor, 14, won the 1,500- and 3,000-meter races in 4:21.34 and
9:29.71, respectively, at the National AAU Junior Olympic Games
in Knoxville, Tenn. In the 1,500 he is tied with Christopher
Croff of Lisbon, Conn., as the top-ranked runner nationally in
his age group.
Larry Carter, PORTLAND, MAINE
Carter, 51, a gunsmith, won the civilian division and finished
second overall at the National Rifle Association Pistol
Championships in Camp Perry, Ohio. The competition drew 662
civilians, 150 military personnel and 50 police officers.
