Faces in the Crowd

Ashley Postell, MITCHELLVILLE, MD.
Gymnastics

Ashley, 16, won the gold medal on the balance beam at the world
championships in Debrecen, Hungary. She is among seven American
gymnasts recently chosen to compete at the 2003 Visa American Cup
at George Mason University on March 1.

Mounir Tajiou, STOCKHOLM
Soccer

Tajiou, 25, a forward at Southern New Hampshire University, led
the Penmen in goals (24) and points (59) this season. He was
named NCAA Division II player of the year, making him the first
SNHU athlete to receive that distinction in any sport.

Carl Frye, PORTLAND, MAINE
Football

Carl, 17, a senior running back at Portland High, led his team to
its first Class A state title in 20 years. He had the most
rushing yards (1,842) in the state and set single-season school
records of 30 touchdowns and 182 points. He is the Maine Gatorade
Player of the Year.

Jackie Jeschelnig, CLEVELAND
Track and Field

Jeschelnig, 23, a senior at Ashland University, set NCAA Division
II records in the hammer throw (212.90 feet) and the
20-pound-weight throw (67.25 feet) at the NCAA championships. She
is an eight-time All-America and a four-time national champion.

Daniel Hannagan, HENDERSONVILLE, TENN.
Bowling

Daniel, 18, a senior at Hendersonville High, bowled six 300 games
during his high school career, including one at the Tennessee
High School State Bowling Championship last season. He helped the
Commandos win the state title in 2001--02 and '02--03.

Scott Armstrong, MEDFORD LAKES, N.J.
Swimming

Armstrong, 23, a senior at Johns Hopkins University, lowered the
NCAA Division III record by five seconds in the 1,650-yard
freestyle, finishing in 15:20.62. At the same meet he won the
400yard individual medley, setting a school record of 3:58.31.

Bob Tysen, KINGSTON, ONT.
Speed Skating

Tysen, 46, a fitness trainer and part-time speed skating coach,
won the 25K North American Speed Skating Marathon despite being
one of the oldest skaters in the field of 80. Tysen has won the
U.S. National 25K Marathon Championship in his age group for the
last three years.
