Faces in the Crowd

Simon Culver, BROOKLYN

Squash

Simon, a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Poly Prep, led the Blue
Devils varsity to its first undefeated season in league play
(11-0) in 25 years. In his two years on the varsity squad, Simon
is 22-0. He's ranked No. 10 in the country in his age group
(13-to 14-year-olds).

Whitney Leman, NINILCHIK, ALASKA

Basketball

Whitney, a senior point guard at Ninilchik High, led her team to
a fourth straight 2A state title. She averaged 20 points, six
assists and six steals per game. She is the first to be named
Small Schools Female Player of the Year for three straight years.

Andrew Davidson, MOUNT LEBANON, PA.

Track and Field

Andrew, a senior at Mount Lebanon High, led the Blue Devils to
their first Butler Invitational title in 32 years. He anchored
the winning 4 X 400-and 4 X 800-meter relays and set a meet
record in the 800 meters (1:54.5). He was named the meet's co-MVP.

Camilo Becerra, CALI, COLOMBIA

Swimming

Becerra, a sophomore at Indian River Community College, led his
team to its 29th straight NJCAA championship. He set four NJCAA
records--50-yard freestyle (twice, once in a relay), 100-yard
free and 100-yard butterfly--and was NJCAA Swimmer of the Year.

Nora Tallus, KERAVA, FINLAND

Ice Hockey

Tallus, a sophomore forward at the University of
Minnesota-Duluth, scored in the second overtime to give the
Bulldogs a 4-3 win over Harvard and their third straight NCAA
national championship. That goal was the second game-winning shot
in her career.

Brandon Birchak, LATHAM, N.Y.

Diving

Brandon, a senior at Shaker High, broke a 17-year-old state high
school record with 543.05 points for 11 dives on his way to his
fourth consecutive Section 2 individual title. He won 51 straight
conference dual meets and set 10 pool records in his four years.

Bill McCorkle, WESTERVILLE, OHIO

Bowling

McCorkle, a 50-year-old real estate broker, swept the Greater
Columbus Bowling Championships, winning titles in the singles,
doubles and team events. He is the first senior bowler to win
three titles in the Open Division in the same year.
