Brooks McKowen, FAIRBANK, IOWA
Basketball
Brooks, a senior point guard at Wapsie Valley High, brought his
career scoring total to 2,831, the most in state history. He also
became the first male Iowa high school player to score 1,000
points in a season (1,002) and was named the state's 2003 Mr.
Basketball.
Debbie McCormick, RIO, WIS.
Curling
McCormick, 29, a 1998 and 2002 Olympian, led Team USA to its
first gold medal at the 25th women's World Curling Championships.
She delivered the final shot in the 5-3 upset victory over
Canada, and her 89% shooting was the best in the game.
Frank Mazza, NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I.
Baseball
Frank, a junior righthander for North Kingstown High, pitched a
perfect game for the Skippers, striking out 10 and also driving
in a run. His next outing was an eight-inning no-hit victory.
Frank has an ERA of 0.78 in league play.
Candice Scott, PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO
Track and Field
Scott, a sophomore at the University of Florida, topped her own
collegiate record in the hammer throw, winning the Penn Relays
with a throw of 223'10", 10 inches beyond her previous best. She
was named SEC and Mondo NCAA-I athlete of the week.
Earl Jones, COFFEYVILLE, KANS.
Wrestling
Earl, a senior at Field-Kindley High who lost his lower right leg
in a childhood accident, capped a 37-0 season by winning the
130-pound Class 4A championship. It was his third straight state
crown, and he ended his career with a record of 146-6.
Sandy Jerstad, SIOUX FALLS, S.DAK.
Softball
Jerstad, of Augustana College, became the second softball coach
in NCAA history to reach 1,000 wins. She has a record of
1,011-359-2 and has guided the Vikings to 26 consecutive winning
seasons, eight conference titles and one national championship.
Kurtis McLean, KIRKLAND LAKE, ONT.
Hockey
McLean, a sophomore center at Norwich University, in Northfield,
Vt., led the Cadets to the 2003 NCAA Division III championship,
scoring seven goals and dishing out eight assists in the
playoffs. He earned All-America honors for the second-straight
year.
