Out There
A different sort of cyclist showed up at the Tour de France on
July 13, when freeride phenom Dave Watson flew over the peloton
during the Alpe d'Huez stage. The 27-year-old Canadian pro
mountain biker had secretly built a jump on a cliff near the
summit of Col de Galibier three days before the peloton arrived.
Says Watson, who tore his groin muscle crash-landing on the hill
below, "I made my move as the last few riders came through. I
think 90 percent of the fans were too busy watching the race, and
the rest who saw me didn't care."
