Faces in the Crowd

Ashley Birdsong, OTIS, ORE.
Softball

Ashley, a junior righthander at Taft High, pitched eight perfect
games this season, tying the national high school record. She led
the Tigers with a 22-1 record that included 19 shutouts, and had
308 strikeouts in 139 innings, with an ERA of 0.10.

Benjamin Tosi, SAN FRANCISCO
Bocce

Tosi, 27, an events manager at the University of San Francisco,
shot 13 points to win the gold medal in precision shooting at the
2003 National Bocce Championships. He will participate in the
World Volo Bocce Championships in October.

Teresina Lemons, SPRING HILL, FLA.
Gymnastics

Teresina, 7, a third-grader at Maniscalco Elementary, placed
first on the beam, uneven bars, vault and floor exercises to win
the Level 2-age 7 all-around with a score of 38.475 out of a
possible 40 at the AAU gymnastics national age-group-level
championships.

Mark Guthrie, LA CRESCENT, MINN.
Track and Field

Guthrie, the men's track and field coach at the University of
Wisconsin-La Crosse, won his 17th NCAA Division III championship
when the Eagles took the 2003 outdoor title. They also won the
indoor title, giving Guthrie eight sweeps in 16 seasons at the
school.

Andrea Warnke, FAIRFAX, S.DAK.
Track and Field

Warnke, a recent graduate of Bonesteel-Fairfax High, won four
gold medals at South Dakota's Class B high school track
championships. She set state meet records in the 400 meters, 800
meters and long jump, and was named meet MVP.

Ashley Farr, WEST COLUMBIA, S.C.
Baseball

Farr, a senior centerfielder at the University of South
Carolina-Aiken, had a Peach Belt Conference-record .483 batting
average and led the conference with 64 RBIs. He was named NCAA
Division II All-America and the South Atlantic Player of the
Year.

Susan Hajec, CAMDEN, DEL.
Swimming

Hajec, 54, a secretary, won a gold medal in the 100-yard
freestyle at the National Senior Olympics and set a national
age-group (50-54) record of 1:09.7. She placed third in the
100-yard individual medley and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle.
