Rookie Watch

On draft day the Cardinals passed on the best available pass
rusher, Terrell Suggs, trading down to grab an extra first-round
pick. Groans ruled the day when Arizona settled on Calvin Pace of
Wake Forest, along with Penn State wideout Bryant Johnson. But
the humble Pace has been quicker than expected in training camp,
and he had two sacks last Saturday against the Cowboys. "The way
he was coming off the corner, he could have had four sacks," said
Arizona coach Dave McGinnis. The Cardinals hope Pace can be a
10-sack player as a rookie....Titans wideout Tyrone Calico, a
second-round pick out of Middle Tennessee State, has turned heads
in camp. At 6'4" and 222 pounds with 4.42 speed in the 40, Calico
could develop into a player who can open up the field for
quarterback Steve McNair....Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel, a
fourth-round choice from Central Florida, showed a physical
presence in a surprise start against the Giants last Thursday.
What the Patriots like most about the 185-pound Samuel is that
nothing seems to intimidate him....Desperate for help at wide
receiver, the Panthers took a seventh-round flier on 6'4",
220-pound Walter Young, who played second fiddle at Illinois to
Brandon Lloyd (a fourth-round pick of the 49ers). Young has been
the hit of camp, and the Panthers plan to try him at all four
receiver spots. When Steve Smith pulled a hamstring in the first
week of camp, Young landed on the first team. He could be there
for good before the season is very old.
