The Chuckie Index
If the Ryder Cup is defined by pressure, the Presidents Cup is
all about motivation, or lack of. Players will have to schlep to
George, South Africa, for this year's Prez Cup at a time (Nov.
21-23) when they'd otherwise be cashing in at Silly Season events
or recuperating from the 10-month Tour grind. Here are the
players, in order of qualification, with their Presidents Cup
starts and records and our predictions on how intense they will
be, using fiery Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden as the
standard of measure.

TIGER WOODS 2 5-5-0 [two heads]
Tiger would prefer to collect appearance fees, but his so-so
record should provide motivation
DAVIS LOVE III 4 12-5-2 [one head]
2003 has been the best of years and the worst of years, and he'll
be happiest when it's over
JIM FURYK 2 4-4-0 [three heads]
Usually a good soldier, this new papa and first-time major winner
is eager for some downtime
DAVID TOMS 0 0-0-0 [four heads]
The star of the 2002 Ryder Cup for the U.S. (2-0-1), he could be
the Americans' go-to guy
KENNY PERRY 1 2-2-0 [three heads]
He's a flag-waver but will have nothing left after a wearying
quest to be player of the year
PHIL MICKELSON 4 6-7-5 [one head]
Lefty likes to put his family--and football weekends--first at
this time of the year
JUSTIN LEONARD 2 1-6-1 [three heads]
He sank the Big One at Brookline, and his dismal Prez Cup record
will ensure he'll play hard
CHRIS DIMARCO 0 0-0-0 [four heads]
PO'd over his Ryder Cup diss in 2002, he'll be dangerous because
he has something to prove
JERRY KELLY 0 0-0-0 [four heads]
Making the team was his goal for '03. The ex-hockey player will
take the fight to the enemy
CHARLES HOWELL 0 0-0-0 [four heads]
He looks shrimpy, but the kid's a stone-cold killer and will be a
team mainstay for years
FRED FUNK* 0 0-0-0 [four heads]
The Tour's Mr. Sunshine, 11th on the final points list, will tee
it up anytime, anyplace
JAY HAAS* 1 3-2-0 [three heads]
An inspired pick. He's a good locker-room guy who, at 49, is
having a terrific season
JACK NICKLAUS# 1 0-1-0 [four heads]
Jack mailed it in as captain in '98, but after being humiliated,
he volunteered for this job

ERNIE ELS 3 6-7-2 [four heads]
As the event's unofficial host and top recruiter, he looks
forward to being under the microscope
VIJAY SINGH 4 9-9-2 [one head]
The goat of the '00 Cup, when his caddie's TIGER WHO? hat
backfired, Singh would rather pass
MIKE WEIR 1 3-2-0 [three heads]
Who's the best lefty in golf? Weir gave an early indication in
2000, dusting Mickelson in singles
NICK PRICE 4 6-9-4 [two heads]
Born in South Africa, he'll enjoy the home game, although the
outcome is no big deal to him
RETIEF GOOSEN 1 2-3-0 [four heads]
May look like he needs to be checked for a pulse, but don't be
fooled. He was a rock in 2000
ROBERT ALLENBY 3 4-10-0 [two heads]
A ghastly 1-3 in 2000, he'll be worried about being the weak link
again this year
STEPHEN LEANEY 0 0-0-0 [four heads]
Despite seven wins in Australia and four in Europe, he's the
least heralded International
PETER LONARD 0 0-0-0 [four heads]
The brawny Aussie has been coming on for more than a year and
could be the star of the match
ADAM SCOTT 0 0-0-0 [four heads]
Another rookie, this 23-year-old proved his mettle by pushing
Tiger to the brink at the Match Play
STUART APPLEBY 2 2-4-1 [two heads]
He's 1-2 in singles and has been steady, if not spectacular, on
Tour the past two seasons
K.J. CHOI* 0 0-0-0 [two heads]
Like Funk, as No. 11 on the points list he was sure to be picked.
Has been quiet this season
TIM CLARK* 0 0-0-0 [four heads]
A popular pick for two reasons: He's South African and, to some,
he was the real star of the PGA
GARY PLAYER# 0 0-0-0 [four heads]
To hear him tell it, the Cup will be the match of the century. He
makes Gruden look like a piker
