Nonpareil in Anaheim Paul Hamm became the U.S.'s first world all-around champion
What a week for the Cheeseheads. The day after Wisconsin's
Chellsie Memmel wowed the crowd at the world championships,
Waukesha native Paul Hamm, 20, became the first American to win
the men's all-around world title. Hamm nailed the high-bar
routine that had haunted him since the 2001 worlds, at which he
hit the bar with his lip and dropped to the mat, falling out of
medal contention. He also won gold last week in the individual
floor exercise and silver--along with his twin brother,
Morgan--in the men's team competition. --K.A.
