HANK AARON, Baseball player
Hammerin' Hank holds the alltime home run record, having hit 755
in 23 seasons with the Braves and the Brewers. The outfielder
from Mobile was the last Negro leaguer to join the majors, and he
won the NL MVP award with the Milwaukee Braves in 1957.

BOBBY BOWDEN, Football coach
The winningest Division I-A coach, with 341 victories at week's
end, the Birmingham native played quarterback at Alabama and at
Samford (then Howard College), where, in 1959, he began his
head-coaching career. He guided Florida State to the 1993 and '99
national titles.

WILLIE MAYS, Baseball player
The prototypical five-tool player grew up in Westfield. The
centerfielder won 12 Gold Gloves, stole as many as 40 bases in a
season and hit 660 career home runs (third alltime). The NL MVP
in 1954 and '65, Mays played in four World Series with the Giants
and the Mets.

CHARLES BARKLEY, Basketball player
Named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history, the 6'6"
Leeds native starred at Auburn, then averaged 22.1 points and
11.7 rebounds in 16 seasons with the 76ers, the Suns and the
Rockets. An Olympic gold medalist in 1992 and '96, Sir Charles
retired in 2000.

BO JACKSON, Baseball, football player
One of the most gifted all-around athletes ever, the Bessemer
native won the 1985 Heisman Trophy as an Auburn running back. He
was an All-Pro with the Raiders and an All-Star outfielder for
the Royals before his careers were cut short by a hip injury.

SATCHEL PAIGE, Baseball player
A Negro leagues pitcher known for his showmanship as well as his
fastball, the Mobile native confounded top white major leaguers
in exhibition games for years. In the middle of the 1948 season,
at age 42, he joined the Indians and pitched effectively for four
more years.
