Greatest Moment
Billy Cannon led LSU to its only national football title, in
1958, but what Louisianans remember most is his fourth-quarter,
89-yard punt return to beat Ole Miss 7-3 on Halloween night of
1959. He broke seven tackles on the play and later that year
became the only Tigers player ever to win the Heisman Trophy. At
an LSU game this fall Cannon was introduced and his run was
replayed on the scoreboard screen; the nearly 92,000 fans gave
him a standing ovation and yelled, "Bil-ly! Bil-ly! Bil-ly!"
