STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
Running back Ahman Green is piling up historic numbers with the
Packers. Consider how his first 58 games in Green Bay compare
with the best 58-game stretches for Hall of Fame rushers Jim
Taylor and Paul Hornung. Green has a combined 7,069 rushing and
receiving yards; in their best 58-game spans Taylor had 6,024
combined yards and Hornung had 3,600.
STAR IN THE MAKING
Colts rookie tackle Makoa Freitas
"We have a guy who no one has ever heard of besides us and his
parents," Indianapolis president Bill Polian says of the 6'4",
295-pound Freitas, a sixth-round draft choice out of Arizona.
"He's come in and played great." After left tackle Tarik Glenn
went down with a strained knee ligament in early October, Freitas
has made six starts while protecting Peyton Manning's blind side.
In those games the Colts are averaging 27 points. Freitas is a
strong run blocker and an adequate pass protector.
MY TWO CENTS
1. If an NFL team wants LSU coach Nick Saban, it had better be
prepared to fork over $3.5 million a year as well as some control
of personnel decisions. Look for the Falcons and the Giants to
show interest.
2. Unless the Bears collapse in the last four games, there's no
way the team can justify firing coach Dick Jauron after the
season as has been rumored. With mediocre talent, Chicago has won
four of its last six games, and the two losses have come by two
points each. It's to Jauron's credit that the Bears are only two
games out of the division lead. --P.K.
