Billy Mills, Runner
Born in Pine Ridge, Mills, who is seven-sixteenths Oglala Sioux,
took up track after being orphaned at age 12 and sent to an
Indian high school in Kansas. He won the Olympic 10,000 meters
in Tokyo in 1964. His life story was made into the 1984 movie
Running Brave.
Frank Leahy, Football coach
One of Notre Dame's greatest coaches, the Winner native led the
Irish to six undefeated seasons and five national titles during
his tenure, from 1941 to '53. His teams won 39 consecutive games
in the late 1940s. Leahy played tackle at Notre Dame under Knute
Rockne.
Garney Henley, Football player
The CFL's alltime interception leader was a league All-Star every
year from 1963 to '72. He won the CFL's MVP award in '72 after
switching from defensive back to wide receiver. Henley led Hayti
High to the state basketball title and was a three-sport star at
Huron College.
Marlene Hagge, Golfer
One of the 13 founding members of the LPGA--she was 16, the
youngest women's tour player ever--the Eureka native won 25 pro
titles, including the 1956 LPGA championship. Her sister Alice
was also an original LPGA player.
Casey Tibbs, Rodeo rider
A rodeo legend from Fort Pierre, Tibbs was 19 when he became the
youngest to win a national saddle-bronc-riding championship; it
was the first of his record six. Tibbs, who died in 1990, also
won two all-around cowboy championships and one bareback title.
Adam Vinatieri, Football player
The New England Patriots kicker hit the 48-yard game-winning
field goal against the St. Louis Rams as time expired in Super
Bowl XXXVI. The Yankton native, who made 27 of 30 field goal
tries last season, was also an all-conference punter at South
Dakota State.
