Mia Hamm WOMEN'S WORLD CUP

Though she cut a striking figure, scoring two goals and assisting
on five others in five matches, Mia Hamm was unable to lead the
U.S. to an unprecedented second straight world championship. Only
one month after the three-year-old WUSA folded because it lacked
corporate support, the Americans bowed 3-0 in the semifinals to
Germany, which went on to seize its first Cup by beating Sweden
2-1.
