Roger Maris, Baseball player
The two-time AL MVP and four-time All-Star broke Babe Ruth's home
run record when he hit 61 in 1961 for the New York Yankees. At
Fargo's Shanley High he starred in football, basketball and
track; he played baseball only in the American Legion summer
league.
Andy Hampsten, Cyclist
He developed his toughness on a bike by riding into North
Dakota's relentless winds around Grand Forks, where he grew up.
He won two Tour of Switzerland races in the 1980s and in 1988
became the first American to win the Tour of Italy.
Phil Jackson, Basketball player and coach
The Zen Master from Williston has won 10 NBA championships--six
as coach of the Chicago Bulls, three as coach of the Los Angeles
Lakers and one as a forward with the New York Knicks. He was a
two-time All-America at North Dakota.
Lute Olson, Basketball coach
The University of Arizona coach has led the Wildcats to 19
consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and one national
championship, in 1997. He grew up in Mayville and played center
on the Grand Forks Central High team that won the 1952 state
championship.
Cliff Cushman, Hurdler
The former Grand Forks resident won the 400-meter hurdles silver
medal at the 1960 Olympics. He served in Vietnam as a pilot; he
went missing after being shot down in '66 and was declared dead
in '75. The Grand Forks Central football field is named after
him.
Darin Erstad, Baseball player
The Anaheim Angels' two-time Gold Glove-winning outfielder had
his best season at the plate in 2000, batting .355 with 25 home
runs. At Jamestown High he was a state hurdles champion and a
hockey star and kicked a 50-yard field goal.
