Torrey Pines South

In the final round of the 1975 San Diego Open (now the Buick
Invitational), Bruce Devlin was in contention for the lead when
he came to 18 at Torrey Pines. His second shot stopped only 20
feet from the flag, but his ball was submerged in a few inches of
water on the edge of the pond fronting the green. Instead of
taking a drop, Bruce tried to play it. Dumb. After seven swipes
he finally got out and drained a 20-footer for a 10. The
following year Torrey Pines installed a brass plaque in the pond
and renamed it Devlin's Billabong.

The course was rebuilt three years ago, and the new 18th is a
killer. It's 72 yards longer and the pond is larger, so you have
to thread a tee shot between fairway bunkers and then hit a long,
accurate second to reach the green in two. The plaque, though,
has disappeared. Bruce is one of golf's alltime Mr. Nice Guys,
and his grave deserves its tombstone, so I recently began a
collection on Tour to get a replacement. The maximum donation is
50 cents--I want everybody to pay their respects to a fallen
comrade.

*For 28 years--the last eight with his dog Squeaky--Gorjus George
has crisscrossed the U.S. drawing the yardage books used by the
pros at Tour events.
