Faces in the Crowd

Ralph Mims, BRUNSWICK, MAINE
Basketball
Ralph, a senior guard at Brunswick High, scored a
championship-game record 46 points in a 69-63 loss to Portland
and was Eastern Maine Class A tournament MVP. He led the Dragons
to an 81-4 record over four seasons and was named Maine's Mr.
Basketball.

Liz Wanless, BELLEVILLE, ILL.
Track and Field
Wanless, a senior at Bates College, won the NCAA Division III
Indoor Track & Field Championships in the shot put with a
meet-record toss of 53' 2 3/4". The throw beat her school mark by
more than a foot and qualified her for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Max Springer, KNOXVILLE
Masters Track and Field
Springer, 90, a retired soil scientist, set world age-group
(90-94) records in the 800 meters, 3,000 meters, long jump and
triple jump at the USA Masters Indoor Track & Field
Championships. He also set American records in the 200 and 400
meters.

Sharee Daluze, HARWICH, MASS.
Basketball
Sharee, a senior point guard at Harwich High, led the Lady Rough
Riders to a 25-0 record and their second straight Division Four
State title. She averaged a team-high 16.9 points and 6.4
rebounds this year and was the South Shore League MVP.

Benjamin Foster, ASHEBORO, N.C.
Baseball
Benjamin, a fifth-grader at McCrary Elementary and a leftfielder
for NC Team USA, hit three home runs, two of them grand slams,
for 11 RBIs in four games at the AAU Classic National
Invitational Tournament (11 and under) in Concord, N.C.

Celeste Knierim, ST. LOUIS
Softball
Knierim, 53, softball coach at St. Louis Community
College-Meramec, became the first junior college softball coach
to win 1,000 games. She has led the Magic to 23 conference titles
over the last 30 years.

Jesse Jantzen, SHOREHAM, N.Y.
Wrestling
Jantzen, a senior at Harvard, won the NCAA Division I 149-pound
national championship and was voted outstanding wrestler of the
meet. His 131 victories make him the Crimson's alltime winningest
wrestler. He was named 2004 Ivy League wrestler of the year.
