Harbour Town

Telecasts of the Heritage often linger on scenic Calibogue Sound,
which runs along the left side of the 18th hole. A few days
before the 1981 tournament a friend and I were waterskiing on the
sound when another buddy, a CBS cameraman who was working the
tower at 18, spotted us and waved us over. As we neared the
green, I made a quick 180-degree turn, accidentally sending a
cascade of water over a retaining wall on which about 15
businessmen were standing and enjoying the view. CBS opened the
Saturday and Sunday telecasts with a shot of me soaking the
suits.

Although 18 is the most scenic hole at Harbour Town, the best
hole is 17. Like the rest of the course, 17 demands precision,
not power. The small, narrow green is divided by a mound, and any
approach that lands on the mound bounces hard and far. The best
shot into the green is a fade because right-to-left shots are
more likely to ricochet off the mound and into the yawning
bunker--or worse, the water--left of the green.

*For 28 years--the last eight with his dog, Squeaky--Gorjus
George has crisscrossed the U.S. drawing the yardage books used
by the pros at Tour events.
