Redstone Golf Club

For the last eight years my life has revolved around my work and
Squeaky. Now there's only my work, because Squeaks died of cancer
on April 9 while I was in Houston mapping Redstone.

Named after Nick Price's late caddie, Jeff (Squeeky) Medlen,
Squeaks had more fun than 10 dogs combined, and not just because
he was the only dog allowed onto the grounds at Augusta National.
While I was out mapping a course, Squeaks would chase rabbits and
squirrels (Torrey Pines was his favorite hunting ground), swim
(he loved chasing the trout at La Quinta's 3rd hole) and devour
headcovers. Before the 2000 PGA, Squeaks irritated Tiger Woods by
running off with the tiger headcover that his mother had made for
him.

The day before Squeaks died, I took him with me as I mapped the
18th hole at Redstone. The lake on the left side of the fairway
and the U.S. Open rough to the right will force most guys to hit
a three-wood off the tee to stay out of trouble. Those who do
keep it in the short grass will land near the spot where I have
drawn a tiny heart, 275 yards off the tee and 166 yards to the
front of the green. That's where Squeaky rested that sunny
afternoon as he watched me do my job. It's a spot I'll never
forget.
