It's good to be home--the RV lot at the Palm Beach (Fla.) Trap
and Skeet Club--for a few weeks because Woody, my new golden
retriever, has a cast on his right front leg and needs time to
recuperate. Four hours after I picked him up at the Toasty
Goldens breeder in Boca Raton, Woody broke the outside digit on
his paw pouncing on a tennis ball.

Unlike Squeaky, my 8-year-old golden who succumbed to cancer last
month, Woody attacks his food like a teenage boy, which is why at
five months old he weighs 42 pounds. He does, however, remind me
of Squeaky in other ways. He has the same impish face and sits
with his head on my lap when I'm driving, just like Squeaks.

One place I look forward to taking Woody is Kingsmill, the site
of this week's LPGA Michelob Ultra Open. Woody will love swimming
in the James River, which runs along 17, a short but intimidating
hole on which you can see the remains of an actual Revolutionary
War cannon. The players will need to be as accurate as a cannon
because the long, narrow green has dense rough and woods to the
left, and a 15-foot drop-off to a cavernous bunker, which seems
as deep as the Grand Canyon if your ball goes in it, on the
right.
