Heard on the Range
After his second-round 69 at the Byron Nelson Classic, Nick Price
was signing autographs when a young fan asked him to pen Tiger
Woods on his program. "Sorry," Price replied. "This is the only
signature I have." ...The Nelson draws more than 200,000
spectators and has sold out for eight straight years, but with
Woods, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson in the field,
demand was so high that the tournament uncovered more than 3,000
counterfeit tickets....Before missing the cut for the first time
in 12 starts this year, Mickelson spent most of his Tuesday
practice round working with short-game coach Dave Pelz and Pelz's
son, Eddie. Next month the Masters champ will make a scouting
trip to Shinnecock Hills, site of the U.S. Open, with the Pelzes
and swing coach Rick Smith....Phil McGraw--Dr. Phil to the
self-help set--is selling his 7,295-square-foot house off the
18th fairway of the Nelson's Cottonwood Valley course. According
to PEOPLE, he's asking $1.9 million....John Daly finished 26th
at the Nelson but was a winner to the people at Cool River, the
steak house at which he parked his merchandise trailer for the
week. Long John didn't sing in the lounge as he has in the past,
but his presence helped the restaurant to its busiest week of the
year, according to manager Pat Obenshain. Daly even left a $100
tip one night. Said Obenshain, "John doesn't have cash flow
problems like he's had in the past." ... On Sunday the
International Olympic Committee announced that no sports,
including golf, will be added to the Summer Games until at least
2012. --J.G., Farrell Evans
