Faces in the Crowd

Carlos Moreno, SAO PAULO, BRAZIL
Volleyball
Moreno, a junior setter at Brigham Young, became the first Cougar
to be named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division
I-II national player of the year. He led BYU to a 29-4 season and
the NCAA men's volleyball championship.

Heather Bortz, ALLENTOWN, PA.
Softball
Bortz, a junior shortstop at Moravian, had a 44-game hitting
streak, an NCAA all-division record, and led the Greyhounds to
the NCAA Division III World Series. She was named Commonwealth
Conference player of the year for the second straight season.

Dave Paulsen, WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS.
Basketball
Paulsen, 39, the men's coach at Williams College, was named
Division III national coach of the year for the second year in a
row by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. In 2003 he
coached the Ephs to the divisional NCAA title.

Caitlin Chock, GRANITE BAY, CALIF.
Track and Field
Caitlin, a senior at Granite Bay High, won the 5,000 meters at
Cal State-Sacramento's Bruce Drummond Invitational in 16:49.48,
the fastest time in the nation this year for a high school girl.
Her 4:29.92 in the 1,500 meters is the second best time for 2004.

Keith Stegbauer, SEMINOLE, FLA.
Baseball
Stegbauer, a senior infielder at Central Connecticut, helped the
Blue Devils win their third straight Northeast Conference
tournament title. He leads NCAA Division I with 1.46 runs scored
per game, and his .436 average ranks sixth in the nation.

Karen Campbell, WINTERPORT, MAINE
Powerlifting
Campbell, 40, a homemaker and mother of two who was participating
in her first competition, set a world record in the women's
(40-44 age group) unlimited class with a bench press of 225
pounds at the Maine State Powerlifting and Bench Press
Championships.

Josh Garner, HAMPTON, VA.
Bowling
Josh, a 12-year-old seventh-grader at Sprately Middle School,
became the third youngest person ever to bowl a perfect game and
have an 800 series in the same day. He competes in the BBC League
at Century Lanes in Hampton, Va.
