TPC at Avenel

In the spring of 1990 I walked into the pro shop at Congressional
Country Club--the Booz Allen Classic will be held there next year
while the TPC at Avenel is being renovated--looking for my friend
Kent Cayce, the head pro. "He's playing with the vice president,"
a shop clerk said, so I went to work figuring that I'd bump into
Kent on the course.

On the 13th green I looked back down the fairway and saw Kent
playing with three guys, none of whom I recognized. Several burly
men in suits and ties were with them, and that puzzled me. When
the group reached the green, my eyes almost popped out of my
head. Kent wasn't playing with the VP of Congressional, as I had
thought. He was playing with the Vice President of the United
States, Dan Quayle.

"I've used your books in pro-ams," Quayle told me when we were
introduced. "They're terrific."

I was shaking and not about to crack wise. All I could come up
with was, "You must've shot 68."

"More like 88. They didn't help my game," Quayle replied.

The hole the pros will miss most next year is Avenel's 14th. It
used to be a boring two-shotter because only a few guys had the
length to drive the green. Today almost everybody is long enough
to reach the green, so the players must decide whether to go for
broke or play safe with an iron off the tee.
