A 17-DAY MARATHON

THE PEOPLE Almost 33% of Greece's 10.6 million citizens live in
or near Athens. That explains the city's two million cars--and
its congested streets.

THE CULTURE The cradle of Western civilization is a late-night
town where dining at 10--then heading out for more drinks and
music--is commonplace.

THE GAMES From Aug. 13 to 29, Athens will host 10,000 athletes,
20,000 media members and one million visitors, 15,000 of whom
will stay on ships in the port of Piraeus.
