Heard on the Range

On July 30 Augusta, city commissioners voted to pay $120,000 to
Martha Burk's attorneys. The payment will settle a lawsuit Burk
filed against the city for restricting her right to protest near
the main gate of Augusta National Golf Club in April 2003, and
came after the U.S. Court of Appeals found that the city
ordinance used to stymie Burk gave too much power to the sheriff
and city attorney.... Tim Herron was found to have Lyme disease
on July 19. Herron, 34, believes he contracted the ailment during
the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, and he started feeling achy
and weak during the British Open at Royal Troon. Herron will be
given daily injections of antibiotics until the Monday before the
PGA.... Fred Funk, 48, pulled out of the Buick Open with a rib
injury and puts his chances of playing in next week's PGA at
50-50. Funk, who is eighth in the Ryder Cup standings, didn't
know if he could hold that position. "The one thing that's sure,"
he said, "is that I've lost control of my destiny." ... Vijay
Singh's caddie, Dave Renwick, came down with pneumonia during the
U.S. Open and has also been hobbled by a bad hip, so Singh's
personal trainer, Joey Diovisalvi, has doubled as his caddie in
four of Singh's last five starts.... David Duval plans to play in
his 10th International this week in Castle Pines, Colo., near his
adopted hometown of Denver.... The Champions tour has an
unofficial hole in one club in which each of the 45 or so members
pays $100 to any player who makes an ace. Graham Marsh, a member,
will collect almost $9,000 for his two holes in one at the Senior
British Open. --J.G., Farrell Evans
